Care & Maintenance

All furniture needs care and maintenance to ensure it stays looking great for years to come.

General Care & Maintenance

  1. Always follow the care instructions.
  2. Exposure to direct sunlight with any furniture piece should be avoided (unless furniture is especially designed for outdoor conditions).
  3. Regularly dust furniture whether it be upholstered (fabric/leather/vinyl) or timber finished product. Use a soft clean dry cloth or a dry duster.
  4. Never drag furniture across the floor (even on carpet), always pick furniture up to move it.
  5. Stains should be attended to straight away noting the relevant care instructions.
  6. Never use abrasive cleaning agents such as scouring powder and metal polishes or cleaning agents that contain ammonia.
  7. Rotate loose seat and back cushions to ensure even wear.
  8. If in doubt seek advice from a professional (usually the fabric manufacturer).
  9. All Reality Furniture’s furniture come with an appropriate Care Label sewn into the lining of all our products (only one dining chair will have care label). Prior to any care and cleaning please refer to the Care Label on your product.

Leather

For information about leather please refer to Terms, Conditions & Disclaimers, Upholstery Leather.

All leathers have different cleaning and care requirements.

Ensure leather upholstered furniture is regularly dusted with a soft dry cloth or dry duster (with no product).

Leather can be cleaned with either a slightly damp cloth and dried with a soft dry cloth, alternatively leather can be cleaned with approved leather cleaning products. Refer to the relevant leather/product care label prior to cleaning.

Avoid harsh chemicals and products that contain silicone or ammonia; these products are best avoided as they will damage delicate leathers, vinyls or fabrics.

Fabric

All fabrics have different cleaning and care requirements.

All Reality Furniture’s furniture come with an appropriate Care Label sewn into the lining of all our products (only one dining chair will have care label). Prior to any care and cleaning please refer to the Care Label on your product.

Ensure upholstered furniture is regularly dusted with a soft dry cloth, alternatively, vacuum regularly with a soft upholstery attachment.

Fabric upholstered furniture can be professionally cleaned once a year, ensure you contact a reputable furniture cleaner.

Occasionally some fabrics can pill, this can be removed with a de-pilling machine, ensure you contact the fabric manufacturer for specific instructions.

Vinyl

Ensure upholstered furniture is regularly dusted with a soft dry cloth.

All vinyl products must only be cleaned with a water damp cloth only, alternatively you may use an approved low pH Vinyl cleaning solution.

Timber Finishes

Timber is a natural product and is porous.

Regular dusting helps remove abrasive particles from timber surfaces. Dust timber finishes using a very slightly damp, clean cloth and dry with a clean soft cloth immediately after. Never use a sponge or dishcloth.

With regular dusting its a good idea to polish or wax timber finishes occasionally (approx 2 - 3 times per year) to remove particles and enhance appearance of timber finished product. Use only approved timber polish/wax.

Avoid harsh chemicals and products that contain silicone or ammonia; these products are best avoided as they will soften and damage timber finished product.

Any advice is given in good faith and should not be considered a guarantee. If in any doubt, always consult a professional upholstery cleaning company.

Fabric/Leather/Vinyl Cleaning Products

At Reality Furniture we recommend using manufacturer approved fabric, leather or vinyl cleaning solutions, water damp cloths or a microfiber cloth/duster to clean your furniture. Approved cleaning products are available for purchase from our Newton Showroom.

DIRECT SUNLIGHT

Care must be taken with positioning of furniture in direct sunlight unless fabric/leather or Vinyl is specifically manufactured with ultraviolet blocking agents or are approved for outdoor use by the manufacturer (usage/care accordance with the manufacture’s care instructions).

Excessive direct sunlight may cause any exposed timber to deepen over time and we do not recommend placing our furniture in direct sunlight.

HEAT

Avoid placing hot dishes or coffee cups directly on any upholstered or timber finished surface.

We also advise that coasters and decorator items (eg trays) are periodically moved to avoid shadows.

Reality Furniture’s furniture should not be positioned over heating or cooling vents, in front of gas, oil or electrical heaters, open fire places or next to hot electrical appliances such as dryers, kettles or washing machines.

MOISTURE

Excessive moisture left over time may cause damage to upholstery/timber.

If you have a household problem of ‘rising damp’ this may also affect your furniture.

MOVING FURNITURE

Please take care when moving all furniture and avoid any scraping or knocking against walls, floors or fixtures. All furniture should be lifted and not dragged.

We suggest that you never move furniture alone and bend the knees when lifting.

When lifting our beds <>do not lift from the side rails as they could come apart from the bedhead and the foot.

It is always advised to lift furniture as close to the corners as possible.
